The Tbilisi International Airport expansion project has officially started, with ‘TAV Georgia’ investing $150 million to double the airport’s annual passenger capacity, the Georgian government says.

The project will increase the airport’s capacity from 5 million to 10 million passengers per year and will be implemented between 2026 and 2028.

TAV Georgia, a subsidiary of ‘TAV Airports’ and a member of French aviation group ‘Groupe ADP’, operates Tbilisi and Batumi international airports in Georgia.

The expansion project includes the enlargement of the passenger terminal and airfield infrastructure, modernization of technological and operational systems, and improvements to international passenger service standards.

The government says the need for expansion comes from the rapid growth of passenger traffic in recent years. In 2025, Tbilisi International Airport served more than 5.4 million passengers, nearly reaching its current design capacity.

As part of the project, the airport will double the number of passenger boarding bridges to 10, add seven remote aircraft parking areas, nine check-in counters, two baggage belts, and expand the passport control zone to include 24 passport control points.

The project also includes renovation of existing passenger areas and the creation of new shopping, catering, and business lounge spaces, with a focus on promoting Georgian cuisine and local products. Additional parking spaces will also be built near the terminal.

The government says the Georgian Airports Association has already received a one-time upfront payment of $25 million under the agreement. After the project is completed, annual revenues from Tbilisi International Airport are expected to increase approximately threefold compared to current levels.

The agreement also includes funding for airline marketing support programs aimed at developing new air routes, attracting international carriers, and strengthening Georgia’s air connectivity.

TAV Georgia has operated in Georgia since 2005 and has managed Tbilisi and Batumi international airports for more than 20 years. The company says it has invested $250 million in infrastructure projects in Georgia during this period and remains one of the country’s largest aviation sector employers.

The government describes the airport expansion as one of the largest investment projects in Georgian aviation, saying it will strengthen international connectivity, boost tourism and transit potential, and support the long-term development of the country’s main international airport.
