Roads Department rules out plans to introduce toll roads on national highways

Georgia’s Roads Department has dismissed reports suggesting that tolls could be introduced on the country’s major highways, including the East-West Highway.

In a statement, the agency said that no decision has been made, nor is any discussion currently underway, regarding the conversion of the Rikoti Highway or any other road in Georgia into a toll road.

The Department explained that efforts to accelerate the rehabilitation of the Gomi-Sachkhere-Chiatura-Zestafoni road are aimed solely at ensuring the project is completed on time and to a high standard. Agency says the route is important both for local communities and for strengthening the resilience and safety of Georgia’s road network.

Officials stressed that references to the road as a potential alternative route should not be interpreted as an indication that toll roads are being considered.

The Roads Department also argued that claims made in a recent media report on the issue were factually inaccurate. While acknowledging that road funding and management are important public policy matters, the agency noted that international practice includes various models, all of which require extensive analysis, professional discussion, and public consultation before any decisions are made.

The Department emphasized that the use of Georgia’s international and domestic roads remains free of charge and that no changes to this policy are currently on the agenda.

“The Roads Department will continue to develop road infrastructure and improve the existing network without placing any additional financial burden on our citizens,” the statement said.

The agency also called on media outlets to verify information with relevant authorities when reporting on issues of significant public interest in order to ensure balanced and accurate coverage.
