Azerbaijani journalist and activist Afgan Sadigov has been detained in Azerbaijan in connection with a case that led to his extradition request, his lawyer says.

Sadigov’s lawyer, Tamta Mikeladze, director of the Social Justice Center, said the detention was officially confirmed on June 9.

The detention was first reported by his wife, Sevinj Sadigova, at around 6 p.m. on 8 June. She said Sadigov was taken away by several masked men in civilian clothes, who did not provide any explanation.

Later that evening, a district court in Azerbaijan reportedly issued a ruling ordering his arrest.

Sadigov, an Azerbaijani journalist and activist and founder of the online media outlet Azel TV, has been a vocal critic of both Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and the Georgian Dream government.

He arrived in Georgia on 24 December, 2023, with his wife and two minor children and had been living in Tbilisi since then. He was not allowed to leave Georgia, while Azerbaijan sought his extradition.
