Aliyev calls for peace and stability in South Caucasus during visit to Tbilisi

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has called on countries in the South Caucasus to remain firmly focused on peace, stability, and security, warning that while these principles are being undermined in many parts of the world, they must remain unwavering in the region.

Speaking at a joint briefing with Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze at the Government Administration in Tbilisi, Aliyev emphasized the importance of preserving regional stability amid shifting global dynamics.

“The countries of the South Caucasus must stay focused on peace, stability, and security. At a time when these principles are being violated in various parts of the world, they must remain unshakable here. We must ensure that such losses and developments do not affect our region. The South Caucasus should present itself as a region of peace, stability, and cooperation,” Aliyev said.

He thanked the Georgian government for its role in promoting peace in the region, highlighting Tbilisi’s contribution to dialogue efforts, particularly between Azerbaijan and Armenia. According to Aliyev, while agreements have been reached, further steps are needed to strengthen and sustain long-term peace.

“We have begun engagement with Armenia through Georgia, and I am grateful to the Georgian government for facilitating this process,” he noted.

Aliyev also underscored the strategic importance of Georgia in regional energy and transport connectivity. He pointed out that Azerbaijan currently exports natural gas to 16 countries, with Georgia serving as the first transit route for these supplies to international markets.

“For many years, Azerbaijan has been a reliable contributor to energy security for numerous countries. Our exports begin through Georgia, which plays a crucial role in this process,” he said.

The Azerbaijani president referenced key infrastructure projects, including the Baku–Tbilisi–Ceyhan oil pipeline and the Southern Gas Corridor, describing them as vital for regional and international energy security. He also highlighted the growing importance of transport routes, particularly the so-called Middle Corridor, which passes through Azerbaijan and Georgia and is seen as a strategic artery linking Asia and Europe.

Aliyev further praised bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and Georgia, describing them as a model for neighboring countries based on mutual respect, trust, and shared interests.

“I am confident we will continue along this successful path. I wish the brotherly Georgian people peace, stability, and prosperity,” he added.

The visit and statements come amid ongoing geopolitical shifts and renewed efforts to strengthen regional cooperation and connectivity in the South Caucasus.
