US State Department Official meets opposition leaders in Tbilisi

A representative of the United States Department of State’s Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs, currently visiting Georgia, has held a meeting with opposition representatives in Tbilisi.

The meeting, hosted at the US Embassy in Georgia, was attended by Nika Gvaramia, leader of the Coalition for Change; Tina Bokuchava; Grigol Gegelia, foreign secretary of Lelo – Strong Georgia; and Ana Buchukuri, one of the leaders of the party For Georgia.

Gegelia stated that discussions will focus on key political challenges facing the country, including the release of political prisoners and the need to hold new, fair elections.

“We will have a meeting with Mr. Andreoli, who is an important representative and senior official of the US State Department. He is here to assess the situation on the ground and examine all major political issues currently facing our democracy. Naturally, he will also look into challenges related to the Middle Corridor,” Gegelia said.

He added that Andreoli’s visits to Poti port and the Anaklia area signal strong US interest in Georgia’s strategic role in regional connectivity and trade routes.

Gegelia also stated that representatives of “Lelo – Strong Georgia” would present their vision for political reform, emphasizing the need for the release of political prisoners and the scheduling of new elections, while expressing expectations for active US engagement.

The embassy says Peter Andreoli is also set to meet with government officials, private sector representatives, and members of civil society during his visit, as well as travel to the Administrative Boundary Line (ABL).

Separately, Georgia’s Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development reported that Deputy Minister Tamar Ioseliani briefed Andreoli on the progress of the Anaklia deep-sea port project, a key infrastructure initiative with regional significance.

The visit comes during ongoing political tensions in Georgia and continued international attention to the country’s democratic processes and strategic importance in the region.
