U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen has shown strong support for the United Kingdom’s decision to impose sanctions on Georgian officials over human rights abuses.
“I applaud the United Kingdom for sanctioning Georgian officials who have been derelict in their duty to protect the rights of the Georgian people,” Shaheen posted on social platform X. “Those responsible for brutal violence against protestors must be held accountable.”
The UK government announced the sanctions on April 10 under the Global Human Rights Sanctions Regime. Four individuals were targeted for their alleged roles in serious human rights violations, with the measures falling under the 2020 Global Human Rights Sanctions Regulations.
Shaheen, a member of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, welcomed the move as a necessary step toward accountability.
