UK sanctions Imedi TV and POSTV over “Spreading Russian disinformation”

The United Kingdom has imposed sanctions on Georgian television broadcasters Imedi TV and POSTV, citing their alleged involvement in the dissemination of Russian disinformation.

Based on an official statement released by the UK Government, the two media outlets were designated as entities “engaged in spreading Russian disinformation.” The sanctions form part of a broader expansion of restrictive measures targeting Russia and individuals or organisations deemed to be supporting Moscow’s information and influence operations.

London announced the updated sanctions package today, stating that the measures are aimed at countering Russia’s destabilising activities, including disinformation campaigns conducted beyond its borders.

The UK has repeatedly accused Russia of orchestrating large-scale propaganda and disinformation efforts since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. British authorities say such campaigns seek to undermine democratic institutions, weaken international support for Ukraine, and influence public opinion in various countries.

Details regarding the specific scope of the sanctions against Imedi TV and POSTV — including potential asset freezes, travel bans, or restrictions on financial transactions — have not yet been fully clarified.

The move is likely to draw political reactions in Georgia, where media regulation and foreign policy alignment remain sensitive and often polarising issues.

The UK Government emphasized that it will continue to expand sanctions against individuals and entities it considers responsible for supporting Russia’s aggression and information warfare efforts.
