Senator Roger Wicker has been appointed Chairman of the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, also known as the US Helsinki Commission.
The commission emphasized that Wicker takes on the role at a particularly critical moment for transatlantic security, with Russia waging the largest ground war in Europe since World War II.
The statement also pointed out geopolitical issues in the South Caucasus:
“Armenia and Azerbaijan have a historic opportunity to achieve a lasting peace after decades of violence and war,” the statement reads. Meanwhile, it also warns that “Georgia’s democracy stands at a crossroads, as the ruling Georgian Dream party attempts to steer the country toward Russia and away from its chosen Euro-Atlantic path.”
