State Security Service: Investigation Underway into Preparation of Murder of Nika Gvaramia

Bacha Mgeladze, Deputy Head of the Counter-Terrorism Center of the State Security Service, says Counter-Terrorism Center is investigating the planned premeditated murder of journalist Nika Gvaramia, Head of opposition-minded Mtavari TV Channel.

The State Security Service reports that Nika Gvaramia was summoned as part of the investigation, where he was provided with information and, accordingly, recommendations were given to him to tighten security measures.

The SSSG says the danger is real, which is why recommendations were given to Gvaramia. Another unnamed journalist is also said to be a target along with the Mtavari TV head.

Other details are not known at this stage, however, based on unconfirmed reports, the murder may be being planned by foreign intelligence services.

Gvaramia supposes that SSSG’s spreading this information prior to the upcoming elections on October 2 could be aimed at causing destabilization and intimidation of critical media, however, he still does not rule out the possibility that someone is planning to his murder due to his radical opposition views.
