US Senator Jeanne Shaheen expressed disillusionment and confusion over the Georgian government’s standpoint, noting that it threatens all the fruits of US-Georgian partnership spanning over three decades.
During the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Shaheen disclosed that her frustration derived from Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze’s request that the US stop funding Georgian NGOs who are critical of the government. Senator declared that such demands put democratic principles at risk.
Senator Shaheen also emphasized the negative implications of the ‘foreign agents law’, noting that it complicates relations between the two countries. She encouraged continuing the partnership on the basis of shared values, especially in the context of Russia’s ongoing occupation of 20% of Georgian territories.
