Restoration works have officially commenced at the historic Sioni Cathedral, with scaffolding currently being installed around the landmark as part of the initial stage of the project.
Tbilisi City Hall says that the cathedral’s roof and bell tower have sustained significant damage, while recent rainfall has further affected the structure. Authorities say the building’s walls are deteriorating, and the cathedral’s valuable interior frescoes are facing an increased risk of damage.
City Hall stated that all affected sections of the cathedral will undergo full rehabilitation.
“As a cultural heritage monument, both the cathedral and its bell tower are of exceptional importance. Therefore, the project will be implemented by the Tbilisi Development Fund,” officials said.
The rehabilitation works are scheduled to be completed by the end of October. The project’s total budget amounts to 1.22 million GEL.
