Parliament Chairman Shalva Papuashvili says competition between major retail chains will increase as supermarkets begin offering permanently low prices on selected products.

Speaking to journalists, Papuashvili says the agreement reached with large retail chains covers a specific list of products whose prices will remain low on a permanent basis, rather than through temporary promotions.

“All the large chains and the majority of the retail trade have allocated a list of specific products that will be at constantly low prices,” Papuashvili says. “This will not be a promotion that happens one day and disappears the next. Consumers will know that if they enter any chain, they will find the lowest price on those products.”

Papuashvili notes that all major chain markets are involved in the initiative, which covers most of the retail market.

The Retail Association says that chain markets have already started offering discounts on selected social products.

Head of the Government Administration Levan Zhorzholiani says that discounts on 15 essential goods identified during consultations between the government and businesses represent a short-term result, adding that work on longer-term solutions should continue.
