The United National Movement has announced plans to initiate constitutional proceedings against the ruling Georgian Dream party. The statement was made by UNM leader Levan Bezhashvili during a briefing earlier today.
Bezhashvili claimed that the move will play a crucial role in future proceedings at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.
“The party leadership has decided to launch constitutional proceedings against the Georgian Dream. By seizing power and manipulating elections, the illegitimate parliament has adopted laws that target anyone with differing opinions — from peaceful protesters and civil activists to NGOs and media outlets. Now, they are moving to abolish political parties altogether.
Although we have no illusions about the Constitutional Court, which has long been under the control of the ruling party and serves its political agenda, we are taking this step at the urging of our international partners and the legal community. The process will be vital for the next stage of litigation in Strasbourg,” Bezhashvili stated.
He added that the UNM would submit constitutional lawsuits in several stages: “At the first stage, an appeal has already been filed with the Constitutional Court challenging the findings of the Tsulukiani ‘treason’ commission.”
