US Senator Jeanne Shaheen has commented on the return of Georgia’s third president, Mikheil Saakashvili, and said it would not be beneficial to the country.
“I do not think it will help ease the situation. Former President Saakashvili had his own chance, he was defeated in free and fair elections in 2012. I was an election observer then and I saw how that election was conducted. In the years that followed, Saakashvili discredited himself. I do not think his return will be useful for the country. The world is watching very closely what is going to happen,” Shaheen said in an interview with VOA.
Mikheil Saakashvili today released a video saying he is in Batumi, and stated that he is to be in Tbilisi on October 3.
Saakashvili’s claim that he is already in Georgia is strongly denied by the representatives of Georgian Dream. The Ruling party claims that Saakashvili is lying and is not in the country. The Ministry of Internal Affairs also denied rumors of the alleged arrival of the former President of Georgia and said that Saakashvili has not crossed the Georgian border.
