Italy’s national holiday celebrated in Georgia’s capital

On June 3, the Embassy of Italy in Georgia celebrated the National Day of the Italian Republic with a festive event held at the historic “Funicular” restaurant, renowned for its exceptional views of Tbilisi. Numerous guests were welcomed with a range of surprises.

The event was opened by the Italian Ambassador to Georgia, Massimiliano D’Antuono, and was attended by representatives of Georgian society, the diplomatic corps accredited in Georgia, and Italians residing in the country.

“The ties between Italy and Georgia—between our peoples—are very deep. This is also demonstrated by the contribution of Georgians living in Italy to the well-being of their homeland. In 2024, this contribution amounted to USD 600 million, which is nearly 2% of Georgia’s GDP. Our cooperation in the fields of culture and education is excellent. A recent example is the establishment of the Faculties of Medicine and Design at Kutaisi International University, launched in partnership with the University of Naples Federico II.

“In terms of trade relations, it is noteworthy that in 2024, Italy was Georgia’s second-largest trading partner in Europe and 11th globally. Politically, Italy and Georgia enjoy a longstanding friendship that remains strong even in today’s globally and regionally unstable and tense context,” said Ambassador D’Antuono. “As a friendly country, Italy continues to support the need for sincere and constructive dialogue with Georgia, both bilaterally and within the framework of the EU and NATO. As recently stated by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Edmondo Cirielli, we hope that Georgia will soon begin the next stage of its European path—one aligned with the fundamental values and principles of the European Union.”

The national anthems of Italy and Georgia were performed by the girls’ folk ensemble “Gumbati” of the LEPL Culture, Sports, and Youth Affairs Agency under the Ministry of Education and Culture of Abkhazia. Jazz compositions were performed by the outstanding Italian accordionists Sara Calvanelli and Simone Zanchini, both well-known to Georgian audiences.

Guests enjoyed Italian designer pieces, famous eno-gastronomic products (Prosecco, Aperol, Campari, and fine Italian wines), and delicacies brought specially from Italy for the occasion. The event was organized by the Embassy of Italy with the support of numerous sponsors and partners.
