Ireland has assumed the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union, taking over from Cyprus for the next six months. The country will hold the presidency until January 1, 2027.
Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin said Ireland was committed to serving the interests of the European Union and its citizens during its term.
“We are committed to fulfilling our responsibilities for the benefit of the European Union and its citizens. During our presidency, we will work to make the Union more successful and secure, while defending our shared fundamental values,” Martin said.
Based on Ireland’s presidency programme, the European Union will maintain its unwavering support for Ukraine throughout the six-month term.
The programme also states that Ireland will continue to support countries seeking membership in the European Union.
“The values of the European Union will be at the heart of our work. Ireland’s presidency will promote the rule of law across the EU and in candidate countries. We will also place particular emphasis on strengthening the resilience of our democratic systems,” the programme states.
