The government has issued a decree on the rehabilitation and expansion of Vaziani airport.
According to the document, the Georgian Airports Association and the Civil Aviation Administration are tasked with implementing a number of measures for the project.
The Ministry of Infrastructure has been instructed to design and build road access to the new airport.
Plans to build a new airport in Tbilisi were first announced in 2023 under then Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili.
Within the government’s plan, Vaziani International Airport is expected to start receiving passengers in 2029. The first terminal is projected to handle 10 million passengers annually, with total capacity eventually reaching 20 million.
This year, 20 million GEL will be spent on preparatory work for the new international airport in Vaziani.
BMG reports that in early 2024, then Minister of Economy Levan Davitashvili said a company would be selected to manage the new airport, while the state would retain full ownership.
Economy Minister Mariam Kvrivishvili later said on November 18, 2025, that the airport is expected to begin operating in 2031.
