The Goethe Institute of Georgia, in collaboration with ‘Projection 24,’ is hosting a special summer film screening program, ‘German Cinema: The Fatherless Generation,’ from July 9 to 18.
The free screenings will begin at 9:00 p.m. in the garden of the Goethe Institute of Georgia on 16 Zandukeli Street. All films will be shown in their original language with Georgian and English subtitles.
The program explores the legacy of the New German Cinema movement and its filmmakers’ efforts to examine German identity in the aftermath of World War II and the Nazi era. The series is inspired by a reflection from German filmmaker Werner Herzog, who described his generation as growing up without fathers or artistic traditions to guide them.
The lineup includes:
July 9: Paris, Texas (1984), directed by Wim Wenders;
July 11: Lili Marlene (1981), directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder;
July 16: Nosferatu: The Phantom of the Night (1979), directed by Herzog;
July 18: Berlin Alexanderplatz (2020), directed by Burhan Qurbani.
Discussions featuring film professionals will follow each screening. The program is curated by Levan Abdushelishvili, with Georgian and English subtitles translated by Mariam Paichadze.
