German MFA hails Sakharov Prize for Amaglobeli and Poczobut as a signal for press freedom

The German Foreign Ministry praised the European Parliament’s decision to award the 2025 Sakharov Prize to Georgian journalist Mzia Amaglobeli and Belarusian journalist Andrzej Poczobut, calling it a strong signal for press freedom worldwide.

“The Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Expression, awarded by the European Parliament to Mzia Amaglobeli and Andrzej Poczobut, sends a strong signal to all journalists imprisoned around the world for fearlessly telling the truth. We call for their immediate release,” the ministry said in a statement shared on social media by the German Embassy in Georgia.

Amaglobeli, founder of the Batumelebi and Netgazeti media outlets, was nominated for the award by the European People’s Party (EPP). The recognition underscores the risks faced by journalists in challenging political environments and highlights the importance of defending freedom of expression internationally.
