Georgia’s Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development says the country’s transport sector recorded its strongest first-half performance in a decade during the first six months of 2026, with cargo volumes increasing across ports and the railway network.

The total volume of cargo handled by seaports and terminals reached 9.7 million tons between January and June, up 22% compared to the same period last year. The ministry describes this as the highest first-half volume recorded in the past decade.

Container traffic also increased, with Georgian ports handling 409,397 TEU during the reporting period, a 9% year-on-year rise and the highest first-half result of the past 10 years.

The ministry adds that growth was recorded across all ports, terminals and cargo categories. Cargoes handled for the first time since the same period last year included steel, various types of pipes, gold and copper concentrates, as well as several categories of liquid cargo.

Georgian Railways transported 6.9 million tons of cargo in the first half of 2026, a 10% increase year-on-year. The ministry says this was the company’s strongest first-half performance in a decade.

In June alone, Georgian Railways transported 12,049 TEU, which the ministry describes as the highest monthly container volume recorded by the company in the past 10 years.

The ministry also reports growth in import, export, transit and domestic freight, adding that Georgian Railways has expanded the range of products it transports.
