Driver arrested in connection with car plunging into Mtkvari River in Tbilisi

A driver has been arrested in connection with the incident in which a vehicle plunged into the Mtkvari River in Tbilisi, Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs said on Wednesday.

Ministry says officers from the Patrol Police Department detained a driver who was involved in the traffic accident on the left embankment of the Mtkvari River following investigative actions.

The investigation established that on June 2, the suspect created a dangerous traffic situation while driving and collided with other moving vehicles. As a result of the collision, one of the drivers lost control of their vehicle and plunged into the Mtkvari River.

Search and rescue operations for the missing driver are continuing without interruption. Firefighters and rescue personnel are being assisted by a team of divers and all relevant specialized rescue equipment.

The Ministry stated that an investigation has been launched under Article 276 of Georgia’s Criminal Code, which pertains to violations of traffic safety or vehicle operation rules.

The incident occurred on June 2, when a vehicle fell into the Mtkvari River from the left embankment in central Tbilisi. Emergency services have been conducting an extensive search operation since then in an effort to locate the missing driver.
