CEC Denies Rumors on Resignation of Tamar Zhvania

“Chairperson Tamar Zhvania continues to work as usual.” – the Central Election Commission.

The Central Election Commission [CEC] denies rumors of the resignation of the chairperson of the agency, Tamar Zhvania.

The CEC press service says Zhvania continues to work as usual.

Earlier, Gigi Ugulava, the leader of opposition political party European Georgia, and Formula TV, reported on her resignation.

Opposition parties have been demanding the resignation of the CEC Chairperson since the announcement of the results of the October 31 Parliamentary Elections, based on which Georgian Dream received the majority of votes (48.22%). The opposition boycotted the second round of the elections and called on voters to abstain; turnout in the second round was subsequently only 26.29%. The opposition believes the results were rigged by the incumbent government with the help of the CEC.

Tamar Zhvania has been Chairperson of the Central Election Commission of Georgia since 2013. On December 14, 2018, she was elected the CEC Chairperson for a second term.
