Borrell: Int’l observers noted violations during election campaign, please conduct a transparent investigation

International observers noted violations both during the election campaign and on election day. They also did not declare that the elections were free and fair, – said the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell.

As Borrell notes, the Central Election Commission of Georgia and relevant bodies should investigate the violations mentioned by the observers.

“The developments after the October 26 parliamentary elections in Georgia are very disturbing.

“International observers noted violations both during the election campaign and on election day. They also did not declare that the elections were free and fair.

“Please conduct a transparent investigation. The Central Election Commission of Georgia and relevant bodies should investigate the violations mentioned by the observers, the pressure and intimidation of the voters, which affects the trust of the public in the process. These violations must be eliminated quickly, transparently and independently.

“Georgia is a candidate country for the European Union and, as such, must demonstrate its commitment to European values, starting with the full transparency of the electoral process. Fair elections and upholding the rule of law are the cornerstones of democracy and an integral part and foundation of the path to EU membership.

“I asked the Political and Security Committee to meet today for an urgent discussion of the difficult situation in Georgia. I also included this issue in the agenda of the November Foreign Affairs Council.

“For months, the population of Georgia has been showing its commitment to democratic values and the country’s path to the European Union. He deserves clarity regarding the election process in order to have faith in the legitimacy of the next government. It is important that the protests and the government’s response to them remain peaceful. The democratic backsliding in the country must be stopped and completely changed, and a favorable environment for the media, civil society and the opposition, which make up a pluralistic, democratic society, must be ensured,” said Borrell’s statement.
