Passenger rail service between Azerbaijan and Georgia is expected to resume in late May 2025, aligning with both countries’ national holidays—Georgia’s Independence Day on May 26 and Azerbaijan’s Republic Day on May 28.
The service, which was suspended in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, has remained inactive for over five years. While Georgian Railways has proposed ticket prices of 50 GEL (approximately 30.97 AZN) for compartment cars and 70 GEL (approximately 43.35 AZN) for sleeper cabins, the Azerbaijani side has yet to announce its pricing plans.
Negotiations are ongoing between the two countries to finalize details, including tariffs and operational logistics. Azerbaijan’s land borders remain closed under a special quarantine regime, set to expire on July 1, 2025, which may impact the exact resumption date of the railway service.
The restoration of this rail link is anticipated to enhance regional connectivity and boost tourism between the neighboring nations.
