The platform ‘Mechanical Waves’, in collaboration with Antenna Bar, presents a new public lecture as part of the ‘APROPOS’ series, a program dedicated to examining cultural, social and political events in Georgia’s contemporary context.

Lecture 7: Cinema, Propaganda and Reality – The Soviet Cultural Revolution in Georgia

  • Date & Time: February 18, 2026 | 19:00
  • Location: Antenna Bar, 13 Gia Kancheli Street, Tbilisi (formerly Constitution Street)
  • Admission: Free

The lecture will focus on the transformative period following the announcement of the first Five-Year Plan in 1928, when rapid industrialization and collectivization were implemented across the Soviet Union. A main component of this effort in Georgia was the cotton-picking campaign in Adjara which reshaped daily life and eliminated ‘harmful habits’.

The discussion will analyze how the campaign was portrayed in contemporary press and in the agitprop film ‘Youth Triumphs’ (1928) by Mikhail Gelovani, created to support the campaign. The lecture will also explore how the events depicted in the film contrasted with reality.

Speaker:
Salome Tsopurashvili, Assistant Professor at Ilia State University, will lead the lecture.
