The parliament of the self-proclaimed Abkhazia has approved amendments allowing authorities to ban foreign nationals from working in certain professions, with taxi drivers expected to be the first affected, Jamnews’ Sukhumi office reports.
Taxi services are expected to be the first sector impacted. Unofficial estimates suggest that in some companies, nearly half of drivers are foreign nationals, mainly from Central Asian countries.
In September 2025, taxi drivers in Sukhumi staged a strike, demanding a ban on migrant workers in the sector, arguing that they were losing income.
Following the decision, some residents have expressed concern on social media that the restrictions could lead to higher fares and reduced service quality.
