Access to the Holy Trinity Cathedral (Sameba) on March 22, the day of the funeral of Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II, will be allowed only with special permits, Archimandrite Iovane Mchedlishvili told journalists.
He claimed that the scale of public attendance has already exceeded expectations, with long lines of citizens forming from the metro area and continuing for hours.
“You can physically see what is happening — lines of citizens begin from the metro and continue for many hours. On the day of the funeral, even more people are expected. The entire area will likely be overcrowded, from Sameba Cathedral to Sioni Cathedral,” Mchedlishvili said.
He noted that certain restrictions will apply to entering the cathedral, including for clergy.
“Access to the cathedral will be limited and permitted only with special passes. Even clergy will serve in limited numbers during the liturgy. As for the courtyard, citizens will most likely be able to gather there as usual, though the protocol is still being finalized,” he added.
The Archimandrite also clarified that media representatives will not be allowed inside the cathedral but will be able to work outside.
Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia Ilia II passed away on March 17 at the age of 93. He will be laid to rest at Sioni Cathedral on March 22.
