The Georgian government will now have the authority to determine, by decree, which state or publicly significant sites should be protected by the Police Protection Department. This change is included in amendments to the Law on Police.
Currently, there is no legal framework allowing the government to define a list of strategic or public sites for protection by trained police personnel. Existing practice shows that private security companies often lack the qualifications and resources.
“The proposed amendment ensures that the government can designate sites requiring protection by experienced officers with full policing capabilities, addressing gaps in security for critical state and public infrastructure,” the government stated.
This legal update aims to strengthen protection for state and public assets while enhancing the role of the Police Protection Department in securing high-priority sites.
