Georgia launches preventive vaccination against foot-and-mouth disease

The National Food Agency of Georgia has purchased 500,000 doses of vaccine against Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD, ‘Turqulus’), following outbreaks caused by the SAT-1 serotype reported near Georgia’s borders since September by the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH).

Preventive vaccinations have begun nationwide, with veterinarians administering doses to livestock, including cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, deer and camels. The agency urges animal owners to cooperate with veterinarians to ensure full coverage.

FMD is a highly contagious viral disease affecting all cloven-hoofed animals, though it does not infect humans. Large and small livestock are most susceptible.

The National Food Agency carries out free annual preventive vaccination, and in 2025, over 1.3 million vaccinations and revaccinations were administered to livestock, including against the SAT-1 serotype.
