Kaladze on abolishing the Anti-Corruption Bureau: It was an externally imposed, supposedly independent body

Tbilisi Mayor and Georgian Dream General Secretary Kakha Kaladze commented on the government’s decision to abolish the Anti-Corruption Bureau from March 2, 2026, saying the agency had been “externally imposed” and only “supposedly independent.”

“It was an externally imposed, supposedly independent body. In reality, this function will be transferred to the Audit Office. Should I evaluate its work? I have nothing to complain about — what do I know? I don’t even know what to tell you,” Kaladze said.

Asked whether he remembers any specific case identified by the Bureau, he replied:

“I can’t say. I haven’t looked into it. I’m focused on my job and my responsibilities — what I can do for the city and its residents. That is my priority.”

As announced earlier by Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili, the Anti-Corruption Bureau will be dissolved on March 2, 2026, and its functions transferred to the State Audit Office.

On the same date, the Personal Data Protection Service will also be abolished. Additionally, from January 1, 2026, the Business Ombudsman’s Office will be dissolved, with its responsibilities moving to the Ministry of Economy.
