Dmanisi Incident Over, Opposing Parties Reconciled

The meeting between the opposing parties in Dmanisi ended with an agreement to end the conflict. The parties shook hands as a sign of reconciliation in the building of Dmanisi City Hall.

The Mufti of Eastern Georgia, Etibar Eminov, said after the meeting that the conflict should not be stirred up or continued.

The Minister of Internal Affairs, Vakhtang Gomelauri, also stated that the conflict is over in Dmanisi and the parties have reconciled.

“The incident ended, both parties met and reconciled. Hopefully, the conflict will not continue,” he emphasized, adding that the police forces would remain in Dmanisi overnight to ensure public order.

Presently, the situation is calm in Dmanisi. Law enforcers are mobilized on the spot. No incident between the parties has yet taken place since the reconciliation.

On May 16, locals confronted each other in Dmanisi, which later escalated into group violence.

Footage released on social media on May 16 shows two groups of ethnic Georgian (eco-migrants from the Svaneti region) and Azerbaijani youth confronting each other in Dmanisi. the footage shows young people hitting each other with sticks.

The police identified the persons involved in the confrontation. The investigation is underway into the mentioned incident.
