A meeting with representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited in Georgia was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where the main topics of discussion were the October 4 local self-government elections and the events that followed. The meeting was led by First Deputy Minister Giorgi Zurabashvili.
Following the discussions, EU Ambassador to Georgia Paweł Herczyński told journalists that the Foreign Minister presented the authorities’ assessment of the election process and its aftermath. However, he emphasized that the European Union’s stance on the issue remains unchanged and is clearly reflected in official statements made by EU High Representative Kaja Kallas and Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos.
“I was invited, along with my colleague ambassadors, and the Foreign Minister presented the authorities’ assessment of what happened during and after the elections. The EU’s assessment of the elections and the post-election situation is very clearly expressed in the official statements by High Representative Kallas and Commissioner Kos. Please see the statement published on Sunday. On my part, I cannot provide further comments,” Herczyński noted.
The meeting comes amid mounting international concern over the October 4 elections, which opposition parties boycotted, citing arrests of political leaders, restrictions on media and civil society, and changes to the electoral framework favoring the ruling party. EU officials have already declared that such conditions prevented the elections from being free and democratic.
