Weimar+ Foreign Ministers urge immediate ceasefire in Ukraine, reaffirm full support

On May 12, the Foreign Ministers of the Weimar+ countries—France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, the United Kingdom—alongside the EU High Representative, convened in London and issued a joint statement calling for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine. They reaffirmed their unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, emphasizing that Ukraine and Europe must be integral participants in any peace negotiations.

This meeting occurred amid escalating tensions, as Russia dismissed a proposed 30-day ceasefire backed by European nations and the US, continuing its military aggression with drone attacks across Ukraine. In response, European leaders warned of impending sanctions targeting Russia’s energy and financial sectors should Moscow persist in its hostilities.

Looking ahead, peace talks are scheduled to take place in Istanbul later this week. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed willingness to engage directly with Russian President Vladimir Putin, contingent upon Putin’s attendance. Former US President Donald Trump has also indicated potential participation, asserting his role in initiating the meeting. However, skepticism remains among European leaders regarding Russia’s commitment to genuine peace efforts.

The Weimar+ alliance, established in February 2025, represents a concerted effort by key European nations to assert a unified stance on Ukraine, especially in light of perceived shifts in US foreign policy under the Trump administration. Their collective actions underscore Europe’s determination to play a central role in resolving the conflict and ensuring long-term security on the continent.
