Polish Embassy: We’re ready to help our Georgian partners and the former President of Georgia

“The Polish side invariably counts on the continuation of cooperation with Georgian partners and declares its readiness for possible further actions aimed at helping our Georgian partners and the former President of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili,” reads the statement released by the Embassy of Poland in connection with the incident concerning Polish doctors visiting Georgia’s ex-president at the Vivamed Clinic. The Embassy called the incident “unintentional.”

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Poland informs that the chargé d’affairs a.i. of the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Tbilisi was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia on 17 July 2023 in connection with an incident concerning Polish doctors visiting former President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili who is hospitalized.

The Polish side expresses its satisfaction and appreciation of the Georgian Government’s decision to allow the former President to be examined. We emphasize the full involvement of Georgian doctors in his treatment.

During the visit of Polish doctors to President Mikheil Saakashvili at the Vivamedi Clinic in Tbilisi, the purpose of which was to help the former President, an unintentional incident occurred.

The incident was devoid of intentions inconsistent with the agreement worked out. It was clarified on the spot and later during the meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia. In this context, the decision of the Special Penitentiary Service under the Ministry of Justice of Georgia to publish the recording of the search of the Polish doctor, as well as emotional statements issued by representatives of Georgian state bodies, contradict the principles of good cooperation.

The Polish side emphasizes that neither the incident nor its disclosure by the Georgian authorities will affect the assessment of the state of health, the actions of Georgian doctors, and the process of analyzing the results of examinations.

The Polish side invariably counts on the continuation of cooperation with Georgian partners and declares its readiness for possible further actions aimed at helping our Georgian partners and the former President of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili,” reads the statement.

On July 14, the Special Penitentiary Service released a statement and video footage regarding a visit of Polish physicians to ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili at the Vivamed Clinic, saying a Polish doctor tried to illegally take out patient Saakashvili’s biological sample by hiding it in a shoe. The Foreign Ministry summoned the Acting Ambassador of Poland for explanations.
