Special forces moved slowly toward Parliament, marching to an automated announcement advising the protesters to disperse.
Tear gas and water cannons were briefly used, pushing protesters into the back streets and off the main avenue.
Once the police, numbering hundreds, had reclaimed the area and formed lines, the protesters began to approach their lines again, their anger still clear.
Some protesters were forcibly removed from the scene in police vans.
