Parliament to Start Hearing of Candidates for Public Defender

The Parliament starts the hearing of the Candidates for the Public Defender as announced by the Chair of the Human Rights and Civil Integration Committee, Mikheil Sarjveladze at the Bureau.

“We start the hearing of the candidates. We have already interviewed them and developed a schedule of the Committee hearings for the current week, including Saturday. There are 19 candidates nominated, who are introduced in alphabetical order. We are hearing three candidates today and 4 candidates per other days of the week. It will allow us to estimate them and make decisions for the next week,” he stated.

The Human Rights Committee is hearing 19 candidates within October 25-29.

October 25:
1. Ana Abashidze – NELE “Partnership for Human Rights,” Director
2. Marika Arevadze – Law Firm “Arevadze, Gonashvili & Partners,” Lawyer
3. Giorgi Burjanadze – Deputy Public Defender of Georgia;

October 26:
4. Lela Gaprindashvili – NELE “Women’s Initiative for Equality,” Director
5. Sofio Demetrashvili – Technical University of Georgia, Faculty of Law and International Relations, Associate Professor
6. Tinatin Erkvania – GIPA, School of Law and Politics, Associate Professor
7. Evgenia Tavadze – unemployed;

October 27:
8. Alexander Kobaidze – NGO “Association of Young Human Rights Defenders,” Chair
9. Levan Kokorashvili – Young Lawyers’ Union of Kvareli Region, Chair of the Board
10. Nugzar Kokhreidze – NELE Research-Intellectual Club “Dialogue of Generations,” Chair
11. Giorgi Mariamidze – NELE “Institute of Protection of Citizens,” Founder, Director;

October 28:
12. Sergo Makharadze – Georgian Trade Unions Confederation, Lawyer
13. Maka Mindiashvili – NELE “Voice of People,” Founder
14. Jemal Natelashvili – Bar Association of Georgia, member
15. Nikoloz Nikoladze – Diplomatic Service of Georgia, reserve officer;

October 29:
16. Ketevan Chachava – NELE “Center of Development and Democracy,” CEO
17. Giorgi Tsobekhia – Law Firm “Giorgi Tsobekhia & Partners,” Managing Partner, Director
18. Iago Khvichia – Member of the Parliament of Georgia
19. Nazi Janezashvili – NELE “Court Watch of Georgia,” Director.

As to the hearings – 2 hours 20 minutes have been allocated per candidate, where 10 minutes will be dedicated for the speeches of the candidates, 40 minutes for the Faction Georgian Dream, and 15 minutes for the Faction United National Movement; 10 minutes are allocated for the political groups and Non-Faction MPs and 5 minutes for the final speeches of the candidates
