“A decrease in new cases has already been seen. At a very slow pace, the situation is calming down, although this should not allow us to relax. The number of cases is still high, people are infected and especially in vulnerable groups, where there is a chronic disease, as well as the age of 50 to 60, there are complications,” said Amiran Gamkrelidze, head of the National Center for Disease Control.
He stressed that the vaccine, especially the booster dose, protects from Omicron complications and a fatal outcome.
“Today, the two main weapons left to fight Omicron are face masks and vaccination. That is why we can not let go of face masks in open or closed spaces yet. It should become one of the main rules of our life. Omicron will not disappear overnight,” Gamkrelidze noted.
He noted that there is an expectation that Coronavirus can turn into an endemic seasonal infection. “Let’s see, we must observe. We must be careful,” he said.
