A rockfall has been recorded at the historic cave monastery complex of Vardzia near the so-called Secret Tunnel, damaging a section of the visitor footpath, reported the National Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation of Georgia.
The agency said the affected area has been temporarily closed to visitors for safety reasons.
Based on the official statement, the rockfall occurred in the early hours of May 27 within the visitor access zone of the Vardzia Historical and Architectural Museum-Reserve, near the Secret Tunnel. The incident damaged part of the pedestrian pathway and its protective safety barrier.
Specialists are already on site to assess the situation and plan the necessary restoration works, the agency said.
“In the interests of visitor safety, the affected section will be temporarily closed. Visitors are requested to follow the instructions of Museum-Reserve staff when moving about the site,” the statement said.
