Authorities in Batumi have launched a large-scale demolition of unauthorized constructions along the Gonio–Kvariati shoreline, as part of an ongoing effort to restore the coastal environment and enforce urban regulations.
Batumi Municipal Inspection reported that a total of 35 property owners were officially notified about violations related to illegal and visually intrusive structures, including cafés, bars, bungalows and retail kiosks.
Following the warnings, some owners complied voluntarily and, as a result, 12 cafés and bars were dismantled and retail kiosks were removed
However, 15 remaining structures were not taken down by their owners, prompting the municipality to initiate demolition process directly. Officials stated that enforcement will continue as per existing legislation if further non-compliance is identified.
The ongoing demolitions are part of a wider campaign that has been underway for several months across Batumi, including its boulevard area. Authorities report that the initiative has already resulted in the removal of:
- Approximately 80 small commercial structures
- Nearly 25 food establishments, including cafés, bars and clubs
- Four branded beachfront zones
- Around 10 extensions attached to existing venues
- The so-called ‘wedding house’ located at the entrance to the boulevard
Municipal officials emphasize that once the demolition process is completed, the Gonio–Kvariati coastline will be fully cleared and restored.
