Khvicha Kvaratskhelia named Georgia’s Best Athlete of 2025

Sky Sports

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia has been awarded the title of Georgia’s Best Athlete of 2025, further cementing his status as one of the country’s most celebrated sports figures.

The captain of the Georgian national football team received the award at Mikheil Meskhi Stadium, where he was honored by Giga Gventsadze, President of the Sports Journalists Association.

Kvaratskhelia had originally been announced as the winner on January 31, following the results of the annual poll conducted by the Georgian Sports Journalists Association. However, at the time of the ceremony, the footballer was with Paris Saint-Germain F.C. and was unable to attend, delaying the official presentation of the award.

The tradition of selecting Georgia’s best athlete through a public poll dates back to 1964. Over the decades, only five football players have earned the distinction: Slava Metreveli (1964), Murtaz Khurtsilava (1967), Ramaz Shengelia (1981), Kvaratskhelia (2023), and Giorgi Mamardashvili (2024).

With this latest recognition, Kvaratskhelia becomes the only footballer in Georgia’s history to be named Best Athlete twice, having previously received the honor in 2023.
