Zurabishvili: ‘MEGOBARI Act’ signals isolation — Ivanishvili to blame, not partners

Georgia’s fifth president, Salome Zurabishvili, says the “MEGOBARI Act” is a clear sign that Georgia is entering isolation from its key international partners.

She stated that the deep political crisis in the country is the responsibility of Bidzina Ivanishvili, honorary chairman of the ruling party, Georgian Dream.

“This indicates a profound political crisis in the country. The crisis has been ongoing for six months, and the country is paralyzed. But the ‘MEGOBARI Act’ and the list that was published — which includes practically every high-ranking official of Georgian Dream and likely doesn’t end there — means we are entering isolation. Georgia is becoming isolated from its main partners. On one hand, with the European Union, which Georgian Dream representatives insult and attack daily. On the other, with the United States. This list is already in effect, because being on such a list means your name is flagged at borders around the world. Overall, this is a crisis for the country.

Bidzina Ivanishvili is fully responsible for the crisis, not our partners. No one else bears responsibility except the man who is single-handedly (possibly under Russian instructions) steering this country into a deadlock, into an abyss. The way out of this is new elections. This is a tried and tested method in many countries for peacefully emerging from a deep crisis, without triggering further destabilization — something Georgia absolutely doesn’t need. We have too many problems, and the country has been at a standstill for six months.

This country is frozen. The ‘MEGOBARI Act’ shows that. It also shows what Georgian Dream and Bidzina Ivanishvili are doing to this country — something the whole world has now seen — and it cannot continue like this.

That’s why everyone must come to their senses. Everyone with any responsibility or holding any position must act. Those who can save themselves should do so; those who can’t, that’s their choice. But we must save this country — and we must do it together, by standing united and demanding that elections be held immediately. Because Georgia no longer has the time it needs to escape this deep deadlock,” Zurabishvili declared.
