Tbilisi City Hall has announced plans to expand the capital’s public transport system with the construction of three new cable car corridors, Vice Mayor Giorgi Tkemaladze announced during the presentation of the city’s transport and urban development policy.
The proposed routes include:
- Isani – Metromsheni – Vazisubani
- Sarajishvili – Zgvisubani
- Samgori – Vazisubani
Currently, Tbilisi operates three cable cars, operating on Turtle Lake, Rike Park, and the Funicular, primarily as tourist attractions.
Tkemaladze mentioned that the projects are designed to integrate cable cars into the city’s public transport network. “The tradition of cable cars exists in our city. In recent years, we have rehabilitated them. In this case, the cable car is given the function of public transport. These three directions will be a great benefit for locals in terms of connectivity. Construction of the corridors will also indirectly reduce pressure on buses and minibuses,” he stated.
No details were provided regarding the implementation timeline or financing model for the projects.
