South Ossetia’s de facto parliament has scheduled the region’s de facto presidential election for September 18, 2026.
The decision follows the early resignation of de facto President Alan Gagloev. Marat Kambolov, a Russian citizen, is currently serving as acting de facto president.
Under South Ossetia’s de facto constitution, a presidential election must be held within 90 days if the president leaves office before the end of their term.
According to the de facto constitution, a candidate for president must be a South Ossetian citizen over the age of 35, be fluent in both Ossetian and Russian, and have permanently resided in South Ossetia for the 10 years preceding registration. The president is elected for a five-year term, and no individual may serve more than two consecutive terms.
