Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, met with Salome Zurabisvhili on Wednesday, October 2nd. The discussion was primarily concerned with the upcoming elections in Georgia and its entwinement with the country’s democratic future.
Von der Leyen highlighted the timing of the meeting, being subsequent to the elections which, in her belief, will be a crucial test for Georgian democracy and a turning point for the future of EU-Georgia relations.
Zurabishvili reinforced this notion in her X post, noting that the people’s engagement to accelerate Georgia’s EU integration is crucial. She also emphasized the significance of moral support from Europe.
“I emphasized the crucial importance of European moral support to ensure the Georgian people don’t feel isolated as they declare their European choice on October 26th,” the post stated.
