Rustavi 2 reports that the individual arrested by the State Security Service of Georgia on espionage charges is Giorgi Udzilauri.
Broadcaster says Udzilauri previously headed one of the departments of the Investigative Service of Georgia’s Ministry of Finance and was allegedly spying on behalf of one of the European countries.
Earlier, the State Security Service announced the detention of a Georgian citizen accused of collecting and transmitting information for foreign intelligence services following several months of intensive counterintelligence operations.
Speaking at a briefing, First Deputy Head of the State Security Service Lasha Magradze stated that evidence obtained through various investigative measures, including covert operations, indicates that a high-ranking public servant systematically gathered and passed information to foreign intelligence representatives.
Magradze claimed that the suspect allegedly used their current official position, former posts and personal connections across various state institutions to obtain information “contrary to the interests of the country.”
The State Security Service has not officially disclosed the identity of the detained individual. The investigation is ongoing under espionage-related charges.
