At just after 22:15, the peaceful protesters were attacked by special police forces stationed within the courtyard of the parliament building. The protesters had been planning to separate into three groups: one to head to the Georgian Dream HQ, another to the Chancellery building and the third to remain on Rustaveli Avenue.
A number of protesters were at the gates of parliament, shouting and throwing bottles into the courtyard. The speznaz forces inside retaliated first with water cannon, then with tear gas, which spread to the general crowd in front of the parliament building.
Ambulances are on the scene dealing with those caught by surprise by the tear gas.
The move has angered protesters but they refuse to disperse.
A fire has been started on 9th April Street outside the parliament entrance.
