The driver of a vehicle used to transport sound equipment to a protest rally on Rustaveli Avenue has been fined 1,000 GEL and had his driver’s license suspended for one year, say representatives of the Opposition Alliance.
The vehicle carrying sound equipment for the demonstration was reportedly stopped by law enforcement officers near 5 Nikoladze Street.
Tengo Tevzadze, a member of the Opposition Alliance, says police officers seized the vehicle, fined the driver, and revoked his driving privileges for one year.
Tevzadze condemned the authorities’ actions, describing them as politically motivated and saying they would not deter protesters.
“About ten crews came, surrounded us, and took the driver out of the car. These police officers took the car. The driver was fined 1,000 GEL and had his driving license suspended for a year — a person who did nothing wrong. Of course, there is no point in arguing with them, but it is clear how scared they are. The fight will continue, no one is afraid of these cowardly and greedy people. We are not going to retreat, the fight will be until the end,” Tevzadze said.
No official statement from the Ministry of Internal Affairs has been released regarding the incident at this stage.
