“It will be very difficult to compare what is more difficult – to fill human lungs with harmful substances or save money and be a state that does not take care of its own citizens.” – Maia Bitadze
The initiated Bill on Environmental Responsibility was finally approved with the third hearing. The package includes tightening the rules for industrial enterprises, increasing fines and creating the infrastructure that allows the State Sub-agency Department of Environmental Supervision to quickly detect the violations.
The implementation of the new regulations is mandatory from June 1 and applies to a total of 85 enterprises.
One of the amendments includes the large enterprises in Georgia to install air monitoring systems, which will show whether the degree of pollution exceeds the allowable.
The latter became a concern for several businesses as it would considerably increase their expenditures.
“It will be very difficult to compare what is more difficult – to fill human lungs with harmful substances or save money and be a state that does not take care of its own citizens,” the chairperson of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Committee, Maia Bitadze, told BM.ge.
