The National Bank of Georgia (NBG) will issue gold and silver collector coins to mark the 1,700th anniversary of Christianity becoming Georgia’s state religion.

The decision was made following a recommendation from a special commission established for the anniversary celebrations, comprising representatives of the Government of Georgia and the Georgian Orthodox Church.

The commission is co-chaired by Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Kobakhidze and Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia Shio III.

As part of preparations for the coin’s release, NBG Governor Natia Turnava met with Patriarch Shio III to discuss the concept and design of the commemorative coins. The National Bank says it will develop the design in cooperation with the Patriarchate.

The NBG noted that it has traditionally marked major historical milestones through commemorative coins. Previous issues have included 10-lari collector coins dedicated to the 2,000th anniversary of the Nativity and the 3,000th anniversary of Georgian statehood.

The collector coins will be released as part of events commemorating the anniversary of Christianity becoming the state religion of Georgia.
