MFA Georgia urges Russia to fulfill its obligations under the ceasefire agreement, withdraw its forces

Georgia continues to implement the policy of peaceful settlement of the Russian-Georgian conflict and aims to ensure the de-occupation, peaceful settlement and development of the country, using diplomatic and legal instruments, in close cooperation with international partners, the statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia states.

In addition, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs calls on the Russian Federation to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia, to fulfill its obligations to the European Union under the ceasefire agreement of August 12, 2008.

“In 2024, it will be 16 years since Russia’s full-scale military aggression against Georgia.

Even after 16 years, the Russian Federation continues to occupy the indivisible Abkhazia and Tskhinvali regions of Georgia, in violation of the cease-fire agreement of August 12, 2008, brokered by the European Union, and in complete disregard of the fundamental norms of international law, which is confirmed by the decisions of the International Criminal Court and the European Court of Human Rights in 2021-24 with a number of decisions.

Russian military bases illegally located in the occupied regions of Georgia; military exercises regularly conducted by the occupying forces; artificially erected barriers on the occupation line; Killings of Georgian civilians, illegal detentions, ethnic discrimination of Georgians and other destructive actions carried out by Russia further worsen the fragile security and humanitarian environment in the occupied regions. At the same time, Russia still obstructs the unrestricted access of international organizations to the ground and the deployment of international security mechanisms.

By creating a common social and economic space, holding illegal elections in the occupied territories, reshaping settlements and strategic objects, various types of so-called integration with the occupation regimes. By approving and implementing agreements and memoranda, Russia aims to integrate the undivided regions of Georgia into Russia’s political, military, economic, and social systems, and promotes the isolation of the population living in the occupied territories from the rest of Georgia and the international community.

Georgia continues to implement the policy of peaceful settlement of the Russian-Georgian conflict and aims to ensure de-occupation, peaceful settlement and development of the country by using diplomatic and legal instruments, in close cooperation with international partners. Georgia continues to be constructively involved in international negotiations in Geneva, the main goal of which is to resolve the issues of the implementation of the cease-fire agreement of August 12, 2008 concluded with the mediation of the European Union and the return of internally displaced persons and refugees. The Government of Georgia is taking steps to ensure reconciliation and restoration of trust between societies divided by occupation lines and to build a common European future.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasizes the unwavering and unconditional support of the international community to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia and is grateful for the support of international partners in the process of peaceful settlement of the Russia-Georgia conflict.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs calls on the Russian Federation to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia, to fulfill its obligations to the European Union under the ceasefire agreement of August 12, 2008, to withdraw its forces from the territory of Georgia, to stop gross violations of human rights in the occupied regions, and to return internally displaced persons and refugees to their homes. an obstacle.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses its condolences and honors the families and relatives of the fighters and civilians who heroically died in the 2008 war,” the statement said.
